Types of Dental Veneers

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain, meaning ceramic, is a customised laboratory-made veneer. It is a strong material, made to match the colour of your natural teeth. Porcelain veneers can be described as a ‘shell’. We call it a shell as it is a thin layer of porcelain that sits over the natural tooth.

The porcelain is carefully crafter to mimic the appearance of a well-formed natural looking tooth. The shell is later bonded to the surface of one or more teeth. Veneers are considered to be more conservative than dental crowns as only the surface of the tooth or teeth are prepared to allow for placement of the veneer.

To have Veneer work completed on your smile will require two appointments, depending on how many teeth are being treated the length of the appointments may vary.

These are examples of an “Indirect Porcelain Veneer”: “Indirect” means that the veneers were laboratory-made.

Composite Resin Veneers

Composite material is usually made up of a combination of micro-fillers, such as glass beads and resin plastics that also are designed to look like natural teeth. It can be bonded and built directly in your mouth to mimic the appearance of a well-formed natural looking tooth.

To have Composite Veneer work completed on your smile generally will require only one appointment, but may vary in length depending on how many teeth are being worked on.

These photographs provide an example of a patient who has had composite resin veneers. Prior to treatment (left) the patient had worn, discoloured upper front teeth. Dr. Luda placed composite veneers on the top incisors and canines (six veneers in total). You can see the result immediately after treatment in the photo on the right. Please note that composite veneers achieved a good outcome in this individual patient’s case, but may not be the ideal treatment for every situation.
