Bruxism is more commonly known as teeth clenching and teeth grinding. It is an involuntary movement that we often don’t even know we are doing. At times you may grind and clench your teeth while sleeping, and this can cause tension and discomfort in the jaw when you wake up. Other times you may be clenching and grinding when you are stressed, concentrating and working out.
There are many reasons when and why bruxism occurs, but the important thing is to know whether you may be suffering from it. Most people don’t know they are doing it even when they are awake. It is the after effect of clenching and grinding that remains that raises a concern as you feel discomfort in either one or both sides of the jaw. Both teeth and dental restorations are put under enormous pressure and will over time begin to show signs of wear.
The person affected by Bruxism at times may confuse the discomfort as a tooth ache. After a thorough dental examination, your dentist will be able to figure out whether bruxism is the cause of your discomfort. They will check the muscles of your jaw to see if they are overworked and tired, as well as the surfaces of your teeth to see if they show signs of wear.
If you are suffering from Bruxism the dentist may recommend a night guard for you. A night guard is a special laboratory made appliance that is custom for you. Although its name is ‘night’ guard if your bruxism occurs during the day that is when you should wear it. The device allows for a cushioning effect when clenching and grinding so you do not have tooth to tooth contact.
In time you will wear the appliance down and will require a new one to be made. The wear and tear of the night guide will show you how much your teeth are in fact under pressure when clenching and grinding.
