How To Maintain Gum Health

Our Dentists Recommendations

Through regular visits as directed by the dentist we can help prevent and monitor the occurrence of long term dental problems and early detection of gum disease whilst maintaining your teeth and oral health.

Brushing your teeth twice a day helps to remove the plaque that causes gum disease. Brushing as well as flossing and mouth rinsing promotes healthy teeth and gums. We recommend brushing and mouth rinsing twice per day – morning and night, as well as flossing once per day.

Gum Disease

Causes Of Gum Disease

Gum disease is generally caused by a buildup of sticky plaque containing bacteria residing on the teeth and along the gum line, our bodies have an inflammatory response to the buildup causing the gums to appear red, swollen and bleed around the tooth margins.

Plaque is continually being formed by bacteria found in all of our mouths. When Sugar containing foods and drinks are consumed the bacteria feeds on the sugars forming plaque. Plaque provides the perfect environment for bacteria that can if left untreated lead to gum disease.

Two Stages Of Gum Disease

Gingivitis

  • Is the early stage of gum disease. It affects the surface layers of the gum where the gum meets the tooth. As this is a very early stage there is no damage to the deeper parts of the gums, teeth or bone.
  • Gingivitis at this stage is reversible, if you are experiencing redness and swelling of the gums and or bleeding gums please call us to make an appointment.
  • For optimum gum health a dental examination and clean should be performed Every 6 – 12, or as advised by your dentist. This allows the dentist to view all of your teeth as well as remove plaque and tartar on the tooth surfaces and the gum margins. Gingivitis untreated can at times become very sore and over a long period of time may turn into Periodontitis.

Periodontitis

  • Periodontitis is a very advanced stage of gum disease that can occur if gingivitis is untreated.
  • At this stage the structures that surround and support the teeth are affected. These structures include the root of the tooth and the bone and fibers that connect the tooth root to the bone.
  • The gum surrounding the teeth is affected and weakens, forming spaces between the tooth root and the gum. These spaces are called “periodontal pockets”.
  • If Periodontitis is left untreated the structures holding the tooth in place into the gum may become so damaged the teeth become loose and may need to be removed.

Signs of Periodontitis Include

  • Bleeding gums
  • Swollen gums
  • Receding gums
  • Bad breath
  • Tenderness when biting
  • Loose teeth

If you are experiencing any of these signs, please call us on (07) 49 531 577 to make an appointment with one of our dentists. This will allow you to discuss your problems and concerns. Our dentist will examine your oral health and discuss your options with you.
